Mechanical Properties & Microstructure Study of Surface Composite Layers Overlay Welded on Aluminum Alloy Plates by TIG Welding

Abstract:
Aluminum and its alloys have formability, electrical and thermal conductivity, lightness and good resistance to corrosion and also they have different applications. One of the weakness of aluminum and its alloys is that they have a low surface hardness and low abrasion resistance Different techniques are used to create layers of aluminum composite on the surface, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. In this research to increase the hardness and abrasion resistance of the aluminum 5052,In several ways the reinforcing ceramic powders Al2O3, TiB2 and SiC were applied separately or compository on the surface of aluminum 5052 and then by using TIG welding process,a composite layer of the surface was created.
After doing the necessary tests and preparing adequate samples , structural and mechanical properties were studied by using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tensile test, microhardness and abrasion on the samples. SEM images showed that a composite layer was created by using this welding process.
Electronic researches show that the spread of powder on the welding side is more than the welding center. Results of mechanical properties showed that hardness of the samples in the composited area is more than the base metal area, but the tensile strength is reduced. The reinforced sample with the particles TiB2, having the hardness of 109 vickers,has the maximum level of hardness.
Results of the abrasion test of Pin on the disk showed that the reinforced sample with the particles TiB2 in force of 10 N and the sample with TiB2 + Al2O3 in force of 20 N, has the highest resistance to abrasion.
Generally it is belived that creating surface layer by Al2O3 , TiB2 , SiC powder is effective in increasing the hardness and resistance to abrasion of aluminum surface 5052.
