Abstract:
In the recent years attempts were made in order to develop novel nanostructured bainitic steels which have shown an outstanding combination of strength and ductility. It is well known that the chemical composition plays a key role in the mechanical properties of this type of the steels. The present study has purpose to investigate the effect of high Si content in the range of 3 wt% on the microstructure of medium carbon nano structured bainitic steel. The steel was cast by using induction furnace under argon gas atmosphere. The ingot was electro slag remelted (ESR) to obtain clean steel followed by hot rolling. To obtain the bainitic structure the sample were austenitized and transformed isothermally at temperature range of 270 – 330 ˚c at different times and finally were quenched in water. The microstructure were characterized by scanning electron microscopy technique and hardness and tensile for mechanical properties were used. Comparison between this study with similar chemical composition were demonstrated that combination of tensile and total elongation were unrivalled, with above 21% total elongation for UTS above 1.6Gpa. while the time of heat treatment decreased until 2 hour.
