Abstract:
Magnetic hydrogel nanocomposites have the ability to absorb large quantities of water or physiological solutions with remote controllable properties that attracted more attentions due to the potential usages in diverse applications. Most hydrogels are prepared with synthetic polymers and non-ecofriendly materials. Besides, preparation of hydrogel nanocomposites are carried out mostly in multi-step processing including preparation of hydrogel, synthesis of nanomaterial, mixing and dispersing nanomaterial in hydrogel. This is not economical and industrially feasible. A novel magnetic hydrogel nanocomposites was prepared using natural and economical materials. Starch as a biodegradable and hydrophilic polymer used as the base material for hydrogel preparation. Here, copper ferrite nanocomposites hydrogel were in-situ synthesized through co-precipitation method using copper and iron salt at low-temperature along with sodium hydroxide in the starch solution. Sodium hydroxide acts as precipitation agent of nanocomposites and also cross-link agent of starch hydrogel. Various characteristics of hydrogel nanocomposites including morphology, chemical structure, magnetic properties, and swelling behavior were examined. X-ray diffraction showed the presence of nanoparticles and scanning electron microscopy showed nanocomposites and hydrogel morphology. Overall, a green magnetic and antibacterial hydrogel nanocomposites were fabricated. The obtained biodegradable, economical and eco-friendly hydrogel can be used in various applications such as controlled drug delivery, cancer hyperthermia, wastewater treatment and many others.
