Abstract:
Coating of titanium anodes by highly conductive oxides of noble metals dramatically increases the applications of these anodes. they indicate dimensional stability, low weight per unit surface area, high current efficiency and high chlorine emission per unit surface area of anode compared to other anodes. Also, they are commercially applied in industrial electrochemistry for chlor-alkali electrolysis. In this study, the binary oxide coatings (consisted of Ti and Ru) on titanium were prepared by the sol-gel process. The effect of heat treatment temperature (450, 550 and 650˚С) on the electrochemical properties of coatings were investigated by accelerated corrosion test and polarization measurement in 0.5M NaCl solution. Microstructures were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The result indicated that coating with cracked and continuous structure created in the heat treatment temperature of 450˚С and the rutile phase grows to tetragonal phase (>100nm) by increasing heat treatment temperature. Also, the results showed that in this temperature, the service life of anode is increased.
