Abstract: |
The addition of antibacterial properties to nanofibers beside other nanofiber’s properties such as high Surface to volume ratio can improve their ability for usage in medical applications such as wound dressing and tissue engineering. Gallnuts have various pharmaceutical properties, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and detoxifying effects. Gallnuts consist of gallic tannin (50–75%), gallic acid (2–3%), and ellagic acid (2%), and glucose, starch, and etheric fats (3%) In particular, the gallnut extract is thought to be a safe antimicrobial agent for medical applications regarding its natural origin. Coating of Poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) by gallnut nanoparticles can make this non-toxic, non-carcinogenicity water soluble, and biocompatible polymer as an attractive candidate for biomedical applications. In this study, nanoparticles of alcoholic extract of gallnut was prepared and coated on the surface of PVA nanofibers via electrospinning process. The size of PVA nanofibers and gallnut nanoparticles were determined through SEM images. FTIR spectroscopy verified the presence of gallnut nanoparticle on nanofibers. The yield and stability of nanoparticles on the PVA nanofibers was measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The antimicrobial activity of gallnut nanoparticles on the PVA nanofibers was evaluated by the disk diffusion method against gram negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomanas aeruginosa and gram positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. |
